Elena leads a pretty normal life. She’s a solicitor, she has an accountant boyfriend and she shares a flat with her two best friends. In fact the only unusual thing in her life is probably her name (her mother had a passion for Russian ice-skating). So when her boss calls her into his office and promises her a partnership – if she sets up an office for him in his hometown of Ballymuck – Elena is horrified. The country is full of things like cows and wildlife, no juice bars, no hip and trendy pubs and restaurants. What will she do?
The lure of a partnership is too tempting though, and before long Elena find herself living in a cottage in the middle of nowhere. However, as she begins to settle in she realises maybe life in the country isn’t too bad, particularly when she discovers her local publican has seven gorgeous sons.
Eating Peaches is an enjoyable read. Heavey’s leading character is quite run of the mill but her other female characters have certain eccentricities that we can all relate to. Heavey has a wonderful sense of humour which means that Eating Peaches will probably have you laughing out loud.
