Veronika decides to die – but then realises how very precious life is. Although she’s a young girl with everything to live for, Veronika is not happy and feels that the only remedy for her malaise is suicide. But she survives and wakes up in the local lunatic asylum, only to be told that her heart is damaged and she has just days to live. More like a fable than a story, the main theme of Veronika Decides to Die is that life is worth living. Paulo Coelho’s writing is simple but not simplistic and his images and ideas linger long after the book is finished. 4/5

What the other femmes had to say
The DJ “I hated this pseudo-spirituality masquerading as fiction. Unemotional, unengaging story that falls far short of the morality it aims for.” 2/5

The Techie “I really enjoyed this book, I empathised with the main character, very well written.” 5/5

The Writer “Enjoyable modern day parable. Standard Coelho territory – fans will not be disappointed.” 3/5

The Artist “A contemporary fable, for the self-reflection generation. Yes the ending was foreseeable but it didn’t completely take away from the portrayal of a disaffected young woman.” 3/5
