Sally Adams has a confusing life. She has a job as a freelance journalist and a group of very supportive friends. She is even on good terms with her ex-husband Diarmuid – but why is he her ex? Why does she avoid writing her articles? Why has her perfectly satisfactory life suddenly lost its meaning?

Sally’s great aunt Aggie is dying and all of a sudden has started talking about Dympna, the official black sheep of the family who ran away over fifty years ago. Aggie wants to see Dympna one more time before she dies, and begs Sally to help her. Delighted to have a ‘project’ to work on, Sally starts to search for clues.

Through a series of letters written to Dympna’s sister, Sally begins to uncover a scandal that has left deep fault lines in her family, a legacy of shame and secrets that persist to this day, and that are echoed in Sally’s own, difficult relationship with her half-sister.

During her quest, one of her client’s cousins shows up. Nathaniel: the man that Sally has never spoken to, but who made Sally believe in love at first sight. As their friendship grows and the mystery of Dympna begins to unravel, Sally faces up to the fact that her life needs sorting out.

Wynne-Jones has written an interesting book, adding an air of mystery to the standard love story that makes The Truth Club a book you don’t want to put down. A perfect summer read. The Techie
