This is the second book by Jonathan Kellerman that features Detective Petra Connor. Widely known for his Alex Cross novels, Kellerman’s new departure seems to be working well as Connor’s character develops even further in Twisted.
Connor is babysitting Issac Gomez, a genius on the verge of completing his PHD at the age of 21. Gomez while completing some statistical analysis, stumbles across six murders, all committed on 28 June over the past nine years – coincidence? Gomez doesn’t think so and convinces Connor to take a look at the old files. Despite her reluctance to add to her workload, Connor decides to humour her young protégé.
Before long it becomes apparent that Gomez is on to something. There’s no doubt in Connor’s mind that the kid has uncovered the work of a serial killer. With just nine days to go before 28 June, Connor puts all her efforts into trying to stop a murder before it happens.
Kellerman mixes an interesting crime storyline with the story of Connor’s relationship with her boyfriend Eric. Both battle with inner demons and are reluctant to take their relationship to the next level. Die hard fans of Alex Cross may be disappointed that Kellerman’s latest novel features Petra Connor and not their favourite character. However, I personally feel Twisted equals Kellerman’s previous efforts.
