Nicholas Sparks is probably best known for his books The Notebook and Message in a Bottle. In January 2003, Sparks and his brother Micah set off on a three-week trip around the world. Always close from early childhood, this trip was another milestone in the brothers’ lives as, by their early thirties, they were the only two surviving members of their family.
As Nicholas and Micah traverse the globe the story of their lives gradually unfolds. Just before Nicholas’ marriage, his mother died in a tragic horse-riding accident. A week before Nicholas’ first book The Notebook was published, the brothers lost their father in a car accident. A few years later, after a long battle with cancer, their younger sister died at the age of 36. As Nicholas and Micah view the wonders of the world they also talk, in a way that only brothers can and as the trip draws to an end, each is as determined as ever to live life to the fullest.
Three Weeks with My Brother is an enjoyable read. Chapter-by-chapter the narrative jumps from the present to the past. To be honest I was far more interested in the story of the boys’ lives, then the world trip. I think the Sparks brothers could have written an incredible dual autobiography foregoing the descriptions of Ayers Rock and so on. Despite that, this is still an interesting and well-written book. Two men who vowed to be millionaires by the time they were 30 and 35, whose family was slowly disappearing, have somehow managed to achieve all they set out to achieve and yet at all times they have always been there for each other. You cannot help but admire them.
